Blogging Aggregator Tools

This is just an FYI for all the new folks that read my blog and still use the old fashion method to read blogs, via a browser (like Internet Explorer).  There is a much better way to keep up to date with your favorite bloggers, use a Blogging (aka RSS) Aggregator.  There are 2 free aggregators that I use:

SharpReader – Created by Luke Hutteman
RssBandit – Started by Dare Obasanjo

Both tools require the .Net framework to be installed on your computer.  Why use one over the other?  It is all personal choice.  There are different things that I like about each one, and I can't seem to decide which one to use full time, so I use both.  There are a bunch of other aggregators out there, but these are the ones I use and support.

Don,
I'm curious. What does SharpReader have that keeps you from switching? :)

I tried both and stayed with Sharpreader.

What I like about Sharpreader is that if you group feeds into folders, clicking on the top folder will show you all posts in that folder, including any subfolders.
That makes it possible to see all (new) posts (sorted by date, subject) listed in one screen, while also enabling zooming in on subject groups created by means of the folders.

The plain and simple interface (no flashy colours where not needed, no popups if you don't want them to) and the easy way of adding feeds is also something I like.
Speaking against an online aggregator for me personally is that I'm a lot offline, and at least now I can read either the summaries of even the complete posts, depending on what is in the feed.

But that is just my personal opinion of course.

About donxml

I’m an independent consultant, specializing in .Net solutions architecture, based out of New Jersey who also doubles as an evangelist for XML, Domain Driven Design, enterprise architecture and .Net. I do not work for Microsoft, the W3C or any other big company that you may know of (at least not yet). I’ve been an indie for over ten years, and although I’ve been tempted a couple times to take a job with companies like Microsoft, I’ve haven’t found something better than my current situation. I work mostly with the large pharmaceuticals that are based here in New Jersey, and usually find myself on long term contracts. Definitely not the prototypical indie consultant, but it lets me dedicate time to my non-income generating activities like the developer community stuff, plus financing open source projects like XPathmania and MVP-XML. If you would like to talk to me about doing some contract work, just contact me via the contact page. My rates vary widely, depending on lots of different variables, but mostly distance from Jersey, and type of work. Plus, I’ve been known to donate some of my code for various projects.
