It’s almost the holiday season, and that means it is time for TV to break out the holiday classic films and repeat them to death. And yes, that means I’ll probably be a sucker and watch a few of my favorites again, and again, and again. Last year, while watching one of my childhood favorites, “Babes in Toyland” (aka March of the Wooden Soldiers, the 1934 one with Laurel and Hardy), I had what I consider a brilliant idea. I’d love to see March of the Wooden Soldiers remade, but with a major twist. To play the roles of Stannie Dum (originally played by Stan Laurel), and Ollie Dee (originally played by Oliver Hardy), I want to see Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes play those roles, but as their alter egos, Jay and Silent Bob. That would also require Kevin Smith to do some minor work on the original screenplay, but that’s the beauty of this whole idea. Now I know what your thinking, Jay & Silent Bob aren’t the type of characters you want in a Christmas movie, but Kevin cleaned them up a bit for Clerks (the short run comic TV series), so I think he could do the same here. But Jason Mewes playing Stan Laurel’s role, and Kevin in Oliver Hardy’s, that would be an absolute blast.
I know it is wacked, and would never happen, but I get a kick just thinking about Jay and Silent Bob as Laurel and Hardy. If someone reading this knows anyone in ViewAskew (Kevin’s production company), feel free to pass this idea along. Otherwise, I'll just have to stop by the Stash and let them know of the idea.
