Syntactic Sugar at the NYC Code Camp

NYC Code Camp 2 will be held Saturday, March 3rd at the Microsoft office in Midtown Manhattan.  As with all Code Camps, this is a 100% free event, and all the speakers are volunteers (and most are from the local developer community).  After the sucess of my Intro to LINQ - Reinventing Visual Basic talk at the NYC .Net User Group back in December, Stephen Forte convinced me that there was a need for a talk on syntactic sugar.  So, at this will be the first time I give this talk publicly (and probably not the last time).  The thing I like about Code Camps is that I can try out new material on a smaller audience, and rely on their feedback to tweak the sessions.  In NJ and NYC, since it is my home base, most folks know me enough to feel comfortable on giving constructive feedback (which is very much appreciated).

So, what is syntactic sugar?  The short Wikipedia definition is "Syntactic sugar is a term coined by Peter J. Landin for additions to the syntax of a computer language that do not affect its expressiveness but make it "sweeter" for humans to use."  This talk will go into the standard sytactic sugar that can be found in C# and Visual Basic, but it will also expand the definition a bit, and describe different techniques and patterns you can use when building .Net application frameworks and how to utilize these techniques to create code that is easier to use and maintain.

About donxml

I’m an independent consultant, specializing in .Net solutions architecture, based out of New Jersey who also doubles as an evangelist for XML, Domain Driven Design, enterprise architecture and .Net. I do not work for Microsoft, the W3C or any other big company that you may know of (at least not yet). I’ve been an indie for over ten years, and although I’ve been tempted a couple times to take a job with companies like Microsoft, I’ve haven’t found something better than my current situation. I work mostly with the large pharmaceuticals that are based here in New Jersey, and usually find myself on long term contracts. Definitely not the prototypical indie consultant, but it lets me dedicate time to my non-income generating activities like the developer community stuff, plus financing open source projects like XPathmania and MVP-XML. If you would like to talk to me about doing some contract work, just contact me via the contact page. My rates vary widely, depending on lots of different variables, but mostly distance from Jersey, and type of work. Plus, I’ve been known to donate some of my code for various projects.
