Finally Rid Myself of Register.Com

Way, way back when, Register.Com was THE site to go an buy your urls from.  Then came along discount domain name registration sites like , and totally screwed with Register’s business model.  Well, instead of trying to compete, for a while Register.Com tied to hold their customer’s urls hostage, and charged exhorbinate transfer fees.  Well, that post was made back in June, 2004, so I decided to check out Register.Com’s current transfer fees, and to my surprise, I couldn’t find any.  Wow, what a turn around!  But I still wan’t sure they were not going to try to sucker me with fees after the transfer happened, so I waited for the entire process to happen before I blogged it.  I can (happily) announce that Register.Com no longer charges a transfer fee, and I now have my urls all over on GoDaddy, who charge me 1/5 the price of Register.com, plus offer services like private registration (which Register has recently announced that they are working on, but GoDaddy has had for years).  I have no idea why Register.com decided to drop the transfer fees without revamping their company’s business model, but I’m not complaining.  See ya!  If you are going to register a domain name, stay away from Register.com, but at least if you make that mistake, you can finally get out of that mess without paying thru the nose.

About donxml

I’m an independent consultant, specializing in .Net solutions architecture, based out of New Jersey who also doubles as an evangelist for XML, Domain Driven Design, enterprise architecture and .Net. I do not work for Microsoft, the W3C or any other big company that you may know of (at least not yet). I’ve been an indie for over ten years, and although I’ve been tempted a couple times to take a job with companies like Microsoft, I’ve haven’t found something better than my current situation. I work mostly with the large pharmaceuticals that are based here in New Jersey, and usually find myself on long term contracts. Definitely not the prototypical indie consultant, but it lets me dedicate time to my non-income generating activities like the developer community stuff, plus financing open source projects like XPathmania and MVP-XML. If you would like to talk to me about doing some contract work, just contact me via the contact page. My rates vary widely, depending on lots of different variables, but mostly distance from Jersey, and type of work. Plus, I’ve been known to donate some of my code for various projects.
